Rives Construction is seeking a Human Resources Manager to help shape the next chapter of a company with nearly a century of history and a deep commitment to the people behind its success.

Founded in 1930, Rives is a Birmingham-based commercial construction company serving communities throughout the Southeast. Rives combines the reach of an established builder with the personal connections of a close-knit organization. Integrity, accountability, loyalty, and respect guide how the team works, and long employee tenures reflect a culture built on trust.

This newly created role offers the opportunity to build and shape the HR function while preserving what makes Rives special. You will partner closely with accessible leaders, support employees across the office and field, and turn ideas into practical improvements that make a difference.

The Opportunity

You will combine hands-on HR ownership with the opportunity to influence how Rives supports, develops, and invests in its people. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Building trusted relationships with office and field employees and serving as an approachable resource for questions and concerns.
  • Assessing current HR practices and implementing improvements to policies, documentation, compliance, and employee processes.
  • Updating the employee handbook and creating consistent onboarding and offboarding experiences.
  • Overseeing benefits and 401(k) administration, supporting renewals, and helping employees understand their options.
  • Partnering with leadership on employee relations, performance conversations, compensation reviews, and personnel matters.
  • Supporting training and career development, including clearer growth opportunities for field employees.
  • Strengthening recruiting through career fairs, industry relationships, and workforce development partnerships.
  • Coordinating recognition, company events, and initiatives that keep employees connected.

Skills and Experience Needed:

  • At least five years of relevant HR experience with broad, hands-on operational responsibility.
  • A track record of building or improving HR processes and carrying recommendations through implementation.
  • Experience with benefits administration, employee relations, onboarding, policies, and compliance.
  • The ability to connect with employees across office and field environments.
  • Sound judgment, discretion, strong communication, and consistent follow-through.
  • A proactive, independent working style and the confidence to bring ideas forward.
  • Technology proficiency and an interest in introducing practical HR tools.

Experience in construction, manufacturing, or another environment with a substantial field or skilled-trades workforce is strongly preferred.
